Brian May Elaborates On Kinship With Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi

Queen guitarist Brian May might have no better friend in all of music that the "father of heavy metal," Black Sabbath mastermind Tony Iommi.

May and Iommi have jammed together frequently over the years. But May recently said he could see the pair taking their musical kinship to the next level.

"I think there's a chance," May told Guitar World. "We do more talking than anything else, but we do a lot of talking. He is really my dearest friend in the business and has been for so many years. I could write books about Tony because he's just the most... I don't even know how to put it into words. You know, he's a luminous human being is Tony, with a wonderful, kind nature and an incredible baffling sense of humor."

Iommi famously collaborated with Queen during the band's 1992 Freddie Mercury tribute concert. He later featured May on his 2000 solo album, Iommi.

Iommi has bandied about doing another solo album for years. But he's also frequently turned to May for perspective on some of his undeveloped ideas. Years ago, Iommi suggested he and May might "find some way of working together" in the future.

This past spring, the Black Sabbath icon said he had sent May home from a recent visit with "four of five CDs of riffs."

May has had a rough 2020 since Queen + Adam Lambert's tour was put on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic. Amid lockdown, a gardening accident and a heart attack, May hasn't had much else to do but star gaze and play guitar.
